“The future of education is in two languages” affirms professor Fabrice Jaumont and linguists around the world agree. There is a bilingual revolution at hand to serve a globalized world in which individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds come into contact much more regularly. Communication across languages and cultures is vital for our common good. Now more than ever, competence in languages is essential to success in today’s world.

Our schools offer a dual language education in Portuguese and English. The English immersion program provides Portuguese speaking majority students the opportunity to develop towards English language proficiency starting in the early years. The additive language approach develops English language skills through academic instruction with the belief that all children are capable of acquiring fluency in more than one language. The curriculum and learning conditions give exposure to both languages; they provide extended and enriched learning experiences in both languages that are critical for their full mastery.

The many benefits of a bilingual education cannot be underestimated. Research has shown that students who acquire advanced levels of proficiency in a second language have cognitive advantages compared to monolinguals. They also perform better at tasks that call for divergent thinking, pattern recognition and problem solving. Every child should be given the opportunity to be literate in more than one language. The goal of Escola Eleva’s enriched education is to maximize our students’ potential as global citizens in the 21st century.
