Period of building emotional relationships, finding pleasure in stories, developing bilingualism and manual dexterity.
SAFE AND RECEPTIVE AFFECTIVE SPACES
We see school as a place of innovative learning. Each environment – the classroom, hallway, library, projects and costumes room, stage, playground – is built to promote experiences in diverse languages and allow for the formation of children who reinvent the world.
Each class counts on two teachers, one for Portuguese and one for English, one teaching assistant (T.A.) and classroom aides. This way we can guarantee differentiated attention and care.
We use the Theory of Projects to create settings that provoke children’s curiosity, to promote inquiry and discoveries about the natural, historical and cultural world. We create projects with the goal of broadening children’s knowledge universe beyond school walls, making them travel in history time, investigating our planet and the animals that depend on our ecological action or, still, going through all kinds of art built by humanity.
Bilingual formation has important effects on children.
The most recent neuroscience research proves that the bilingual brain has superior executive functions essential for learning. When children are immersed in a bilingual environment, there are implications for cerebral development. Bilingual children can better adjust to environmental changes and have longer attention spans.
As we have adopted the International Primary Curriculum(IPC), the learning objectives in content and language are achieved through creative, age appropriate themes. This curriculum also introduces the international mindedness which will be reinforced in later years.
PLAYING AND CREATIVE EXPERIENCES
We see childhood as a time to live creative experiences. Free play should be a constant part of the day and activities should be organized in a way to secure a calm, curious and joyful routine.
