In Escola Eleva, assessment is an essential part of the learning process. Through assessment instruments, the student can understand his personal learning process, perceive what is well grounded and what needs to be further examined. Assessment also lets educators gauge the effectiveness of their pedagogical action and equips them to plan changes that will help students on their learning path.
Thereby, assessment instruments follow curricular units development according to the learning objectives defined by the teacher. One of their principles is that qualitative aspects are considered more important than the quantitative ones.
Escola Eleva works with two types of assessment:
Formative – its main function is to guide and improve teaching and learning. It is composed of formal and informal activities carried out in the classroom or at home.
Summative – its main function is to gauge how much the student has learned. It is composed of formal exams, such as presentations, seminars and tests.
In Kindergarten, students’ work is documented in a portfolio. This way, it is possible to observe their learning process and to assess to what measure they have achieved the proposed learning objectives. This portfolio goes home at the end of every month so guardians can follow students’ progress. At the end of each semester, teachers will also send home a written report showing how the child is performing regarding the learning objectives set for their age group.
In Lower School, grades are translated into concepts, according to how much of the learning objectives were achieved. The concepts are “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” and “E”. They have decreasing values and mean:
A – Learning objectives were fully met;
B – Learning objectives were met with quality;
C – Learning objectives were met;
D – Learning objectives were partially met;
E – Learning objectives were minimally met.
In the initial years, students’ work is documented in a portfolio. This way, it is possible to observe their learning process and to assess to what measure they have achieved the proposed learning objectives. They are evaluated with criteria that describe the level of learning. From the second semester of 3rd grade on, traditional individual tests, besides the portfolio, work presentation and production will also be evaluated.
